How to tell a story with one image

My formula for telling a story in a single image. Theme Narrative Reason Obviously, you don't often want to tell a whole story in one image. But this works for a scene, a book, a movie, whatever. JPEG can't do very slow gradients because there is quantization in YCbCr domain, which is only removed with the new JpegLi codec which no software has. You can see a similar effect in the video encoding on the chart scenes here. They show a grey ellipse with blocky borders instead of a smooth blob. Lossless EXR compression is better/faster than PNG. But it's a very complex format and only pro tools support it fully.

Hey there! Quick question: do you have any insight on how we go about separating (for baking) a texture that has the decals applied after the Principled BSDF? I'm used to baking the separate texture maps by what's plugged into the BSDF node, but not sure how to include the decals on the texture since they are added with a mix shader. TIA!

When you know the fundamentals, you can make these kinds of effects from scratch. Like if you learn to model a chair, you also know how to model a shelf. I could make that particular effect because I know the fundamentals of compositing. If you want to make the same kinds of discoveries, learn as much as you can about the relevant technologies! Compositing, procedural texturing, vector mathematics, rigging, and so on. It's a lot, I know, but you'll get there in time. Good luck!

the majority of what i actually learned in blender came from discovering it on my own time. tutorials teach you how to do something and even tho a lot of videos tell you what each small adjustment does, it wont get stuck in your head. so, as i did, i learned blender from playing around with the software, googling if i really didnt know what something does. that way i made more progress than any tutorial ever did for me. you learn wich features to use for what and thats a skill you just cant learn through tutorials. ive been at this for 2 years on and off and im by no means good at it. but im getting there. improving bit by bit. if you have passion, you dont need tutorials. you only need yourself.

In terms of topology i can recommend two channels, both are very precise maximalists. One of them is Aryan. He speaks very fast, but he says only the point, therefore everybody can learn a lot from him. The other youtuber is Ian McGlasham. He also shows how to make good topology and how to avoid amaterur-ish mistakes. Besides that, both of them are very good teachers, whose only goal is to give back the vast knowledge they has acquired over time. Unfortunately I cannot say all of this about Josh Gambell. Most of the time he is just trying to sell his own addons.

So in 3 months you grew from 65 to 14k subs. Well deserved, because this tutorial is awesome. While mesh-based decals certainly have their important use cases, I also mainly wanted to go with a method, that wouldn't generate z-fighting or have a visible distance between decal and surface. This is going to be very helpful!

I have a question regarding View Layers. I'm trying to find a way to make a View Layer a multilayer EXR with only Utility Passes (Z, Mist, Normal, Position, etc.). The problem is when I render Z or Mist in each View Layer with cutouts, the passes get cutout aswell. What's the workaround for this? How can I render a Z/Mist Pass cleanly without having to render through Cycles again?

I'm not sure the explanation at 0:56 is correct at all 9 bit is twice as big as 8, 10 bit is twice as big as 9 every single bit double the amount so 16 isn't twice as big, it's 64 times as big and 32 bit is 256 times bigger biggest 8 bit in is 128 i think biggest 32 bit int is 2'147'483'647 and biggest 64 bit int is 9'223'372'036'854'775'808

firstly interesting takes, this is a complex and very nuanced subject and its awesome your delving into it. I'm a pipeline engineer and I've had to deal with this subject for nearly 2 decades now, and I have a few insights. So there are 2 sorts of image formats in CG, production formats and review formats. **Production** Generally production formats contain high bit-depth data with lossless compression and are stored in specialized colorspaces (usually ACES, or some form of LOG) The purpose of these formats is store high fidelity data which can be read/written by multiple departments without data loss. For example files being sent from color grading to comp. **Review** Generally review formats are lower bit depth and stored in colorspaces like REC-709 or SRGB. The purpose of these formats is to store data viewable by clients or in review sessions. These files are compact, fast to load and view, and most programs can display them correctly without any additional configuration. They'll never be graded so their lossy compression never affects their appearance too much. The review format discards an enormous about of data which our eyes are less capable of distinguishing, so the file size is lower, but if you try to grade these formats you instantly see banding, and blowouts. JPEG, DWAA and DWAB all use a type of compression called DCT or Discreet Cosine Transform. This form of compression doesn't store the image in pixels, it breaks it into blocks and uses pre-defined overlapping cosines to provide a near approximation. I believe some studios use DWAA/B in production but they're doing it knowing that they're accepting the lossyness (on one CG film I worked on we used it without issue) DCT is a VERY lossy compression format that relies on how bad our eyes are at discerning luminescence differences in shadows, and color variations. Its fantastic for the review but terrible if you every want to use the image as a production texture, or input for compositing. These describe lossy compression really well. ruclips.net/video/Q2aEzeMDHMA/видео.html ruclips.net/video/swoIPD7EvEw/видео.html For color textures 16-bit linear is king, but most people can live with PNG. For data textures like displacement / normals you should use a lossless format with high bit depth or you will see artifacts. (especially when you overdrive them) I don't know if cycles has a preferred image format, but most render engines use mip mapped and memory mapped images to improve performance. TLDR: - JPEG is for the web, its fantastic for that but sucks for eveything else. dont use it for production files. - Use EXR Scanline if you can afford it, and DWA/B if you cant, use PNG if you have no other option.
